WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif., /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Dr. Bernard Luskin, CEO and Senior Provost of Touro University Worldwide, today announced the inaugural TUW Commencement Ceremony to take place on Sunday afternoon, June 3, 2012 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Westlake Village, California.

“We will enthusiastically celebrate the accomplishments of our first graduating class. The majority of the 30 graduates and their families are joining classmates from across the United States plus others from as far away as Canterbury, England,” Luskin proudly explained.

“When we launched TUW in 2008, President Bernard Lander had a vision of someday seeing our first graduates. Dr. Lander passed away several years ago, but his vision has now been achieved. Our goal was to establish an online division of the Touro College and University System that provides access and opportunity for a quality, highly personalized, graduate education that is accessible to students all over the world. This inaugural commencement memorializes this major milestone symbolizing TUW success. We look forward to expanding our student body and programs and to many more future graduates,” Luskin added.

“Twenty-eight graduates have earned a Masters Degree in Media and Communication Psychology; one has completed his MA degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology and one, her MBA. Some of the thirty new graduates will be meeting one another in person for the first time at commencement, even though they have spoken and participated together online,” said Heather Grace Hoglund, Director of Enrollment Management and Alumni Affairs for Touro University Worldwide. “We are now forming our new TUW Alumni Association,” she added.

“Media and Communication Psychology is an emerging new field. Our graduates are working professionals, many at the top of their industries in fields as diverse as Pharmaceuticals, Bio-technology, Public Relations, and Higher Education. Graduates have already started applying their unique understanding of how social media, entertainment, and advertising impacts consumer and professional behavior. We are teaching in direct response to current trends and our Alumni will be leading the way in this field that combines, Media, Psychology and Communication skills and knowledge,” explained Dr. Toni Luskin, Chair of the Media and Communications Psychology Program.

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif., — Dr. Bernard Luskin, CEO and Sr. Provost of Touro University Worldwide today announced the availability of a strategic new book by TUW Industrial and Organizational Psychology Professor Arnie Dahlke, Ph.D.

“I am thrilled with the publication of Succession Planning for Dummies as a text to be recommended in programs such as Touro University Worldwide Professor Authors Dummies Book on Leadership and Succession Planning. My goal is that Succession Planning for Dummies becomes a reference for companies, consultants, and Human Resource departments everywhere. Change is inevitable. How we handle the change is critical when planning a graceful and effective succession,” said Dahlke.

“This is Dr. Dahlke’s third book. Other books by Professor Dahlke focus on team building within organizations and helping employees make productive choices. These are important subjects for companies and corporations as well as students enrolled in the MA degree program in Industrial and Organizational Psychology,” added Luskin.

“He brings extensive knowledge and experience in operational strategy development and customer service to his students. In his Consulting Psychology work, Arnie helps Boards, Executives, Teams, and Individual Contributors align their roles with the organization’s mission and strategy. Clients include Chevrolet, Saturn, Coca Cola, Gelson’s Markets, and Northgate Markets. Arnie Dahlke is a practicing example of a scholar practitioner. We are pleased to have Dr. Dahlke as Program Director for our I-O Psychology program and in a central role in growing TUW psychology-centric programs,” Luskin explained.

The TUW Industrial and Organizational Psychology graduate program is enrolling interested students every day. The online program is specifically designed for the working adult and prides itself on the applied knowledge students receive, helping them excel in the workplace in settings that foster personal attention and small classes.

Touro University Worldwide Graduates 2012 Master’s Degree Recipients in Industrial & Organizational Psychology

</ br>
WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif., April 2, 2012 – Dr. Bernard Luskin, CEO and Senior Provost of Touro University Worldwide announced the first graduates participating in a commencement scheduled for June 3, 2012 in Westlake Village, California. Master’s degree recipients completing the Industrial and Organizational Psychology are included in the graduating class.

“The I-O Psychology Program is a 21st-century program designed to help employees in all types of organizations collaborate and function more effectively in today’s changing world. The nature of change has changed, and we must change with it,” asserted Luskin.

“Organizations today are immersed in a dramatic change never before experienced in history,” added Dr. Arnie Dahlke, Chair of the program. “Globalization, new technologies connecting everyone, everywhere plus increasing diversity of the workforce challenge people to adapt to new ways of thinking. The TUW M.A. Program in I-O Psychology is designed to help people meet today’s challenge.”

“I am particularly proud of our scholar-practitioner approach to learning,” said Dahlke. “Every professor is committed to helping students translate the latest theories and research into practical applications in a student’s own workplace. The degree may be earned online in easy-to-manage eight-week terms. Courses are designed to be convenient for busy working people.”

“I can confirm the phenomenal atmosphere this university creates bringing us together across time zones and distance,” says Leslie Finley, a student in the program. “As an active duty military member, I must solve time issues. The staff at Touro has always been helpful and promptly accommodated each request. The customer service here is top notch. I am proud to be a student in the MA degree program.”

Nati Weiss, one of the first graduates of the program, is equally enthusiastic. “It’s a phenomenal program,” he says. “Every professor is aware of our busy work lives and is very flexible in terms of participation and assignments. The course content has been valuable in sharpening my career focus. When I first started the program I was interested in working in Human Resources. Course by course, this program gave me very valuable information about how to manage a Human Resource department and how to deal with people at every level in any organization.”

TUW is now enrolling new students in the program every day.

Results are revealing specific outcomes affecting the brain and behavior. Media psychology is now an official sub-specialty in the field of psychology. Recently, in Washington, D.C., I participated as member of the board of directors of Division 46, the Media Psychology Division of the American Psychology Association (APA) when we examined some of the new knowledge about the good and bad effects of video games, online learning and internet resources such as Google, Yahoo and other media that most of us use every day.

Recent studies now validate the reality of Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD). IAD can cause tremors, shivers, nausea and anxiety in some addicts. Many professionals now consider IAD analogous to substance abuse. They include it among other pathological behaviors such as gambling and eating disorders. Try removing a young “gamer” from a video game in a hurry. You will discover how difficult it is to break the attachment between the teen and the screen.

In short, some people use broadcast and Internet media as a mental and emotional retreat and refuge. Addicts are connected to their screens; their minds trapped for hours to the exclusion of the world around them. Addicts neglect family, work, studies, social relationships and themselves. This is an addictive obsession that is human-centered and screen-deep. Mind-altering media applications may be found in video games, iPods, YouTube and other evolving communications applications. In general, these negative aspects of media and behavior are being widely discussed simultaneously with the discussion of the beneficial contributions media makes as an important source for positive behavioral change.

Telemedicine, teletherapy and telehealth are yielding new information and better understanding that will lead to improved services to the public. The value of positive psychology has been validated. Positive media messages are helping to improve public understanding of major social and medical consequences of issues affecting the public such as body weight, diet and lack of exercise, high cholesterol, and hypertension to highlight only a few. Increased public awareness and understanding through media is leading us to positive behavioral changes. Media psychology applied to major social issues can be a force for good. In addition, the growth of new Internet applications in commercial areas such as online buying and banking are positively contributing to the world’s economy at an astonishing rate.

Media-centric education is also growing apace. Education, from kindergarten through graduate school, corporate education and careerlearning, is being transformed by media. The art and science of teaching and learning in virtual environments is a highly specialized field that now requires specific understanding and expertise. I recently enjoyed dinner with Apollo astronaut Buzz Aldrin, with whom I serve on the Board of HiTechHigh, Los Angeles. We talked about the current state of education, media and technology. Buzz, who earned a Ph.D in astronautics from MIT, observed that “children today have more computer power at their fingertips to do their homework than was onboard the space vehicles that fist carried us into space.” When I asked Buzz if this is a good or bad thing, he shot back, “Its good….absolutely.” Media and social media are distributors and drivers of social change. We need increased understanding of the effects of media to help manage our future. Our community must grapple with our cultural or religious sensitivities. If we don’t shape our future, it will shape us.

THE GOOD MEDIA EFFECTS:

IQs are rising, according to the Education Testing Service. Much of the increase is due to advances in media assisted learning and interactive game playing.

Girls are advancing in the field of science. Some studies attribute this to increased numbers of females engaging in interactive game play.

The nexus between media and learning is increasingly popular and we are learning more about learning.

Communication is increasing across cultures.

Media has helped foster public understanding of many crucial issues.

THE BAD MEDIA EFFECTS:

Attention spans are decreasing because of exposure to excessively stimulating and fast-paced media. A direct link between exposure to media stimulation and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) has surfaced from research.

Violence in media causes desensitization to violence. It may facilitate violent acts. Violence may be contagious by observational learning and social agreement.

Media-assisted crimes like identity theft and child pornography are taking new forms.

Average number of sleep hours per night decreases in inverse proportion to the average number of hours per day of Internet use.

Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD) is increasingly diagnosed by professionals.

CONCLUSIONS:

Research has found that playing action video games has a positive effect leading to improvements in visual attention. Therefore, research is revealing both problems and benefits from the relationship between media stimulation and attention. More study is important.

Media studies, media and culture, media and communications psychology, are central to our early 21st century world. New knowledge is emerging. We presently know a lot more than we understand. As responsible parents and citizens, we must “pay attention.”

I am pleased to have the opportunity to share some of the new knowledge from the field of media psychology, especially as it relates to the family, and to discuss questions as part of our effort to create a a positive future together.

Dr. Bernard Luskin, LMFT, is CEO, Senior Provost and Professor of Media Psychology and Marriage and Family Therapy at Touro University Worldwide (www.TUW.edu). Luskin is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, member of the Board of the Media Psychology Division of the American Psychological Association and received the APA 2011 Media Psychology Division Award for Lifetime Contributions to Media Psychology.

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif., March 6, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Dr. Bernard Luskin, CEO and Senior Provost, today announced the addition of a certificate program in pastoral counseling at Touro University Worldwide.

“Pastors, military and civilian chaplains, rabbi’s, priest’s and lay individuals seeking to enhance their knowledge of family and couples therapy as part of their pastoral counseling responsibilities will benefit from and be attracted to this new certificate program,” Luskin explained.

“The Certificate in Pastoral Counseling may be completed as a standalone certificate. It will also be of interest to clergy in our TUW MA degree program Marriage and Family Therapy,” added Dr. Michael Hamlin, Director of Professional Psychology Programs.

“The pastoral counseling certificate program is appropriate for those wishing to develop additional insights and greater expertise in providing family therapy support services. A Certificate Program in Pastoral Counseling from Touro University Worldwide offers an opportunity to enhance understanding of human behavior and improve skills in working with groups, families, couples, adults and children,” Hamlin explained.

This TUW online pastoral counseling certificate may be completed independently or as a supplement to licensure courses leading to the TUW MA degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. Touro University Worldwide offers five eight-week terms each year. The complete certificate may be completed in one year.

The MFT program includes subjects such as psychopathology, psychobiology, the psychology of aging, death and dying, human sexuality, family systems, and other topics typically addressed in the pastoral counseling context. The certificate program in Pastoral Counseling emphasizes the study of theories and practices special and necessary for effective pastoral counseling.

“Pastoral counseling includes unique areas requiring additional specialization in theory and practice. Clergy have special ethical considerations plus unique sensitive situational requirements when dealing with congregants and parishioners. Many times, clergy have a unique and substantial history with all members of a family,” explained Dr. Luskin. “Our TUW Professional Psychology Advisory Committee has identified that many clergy may benefit significantly from professional development and training in the theory, method and techniques of pastoral counseling and recommended that TUW offer this important certificate,” he said.

“At TUW, participants learn as a member of a community of common interest and practice. Participants are taught by gifted faculty members who are educators as well as experienced mental health professionals. A team of IT professionals also provides assistance to those enrolled in using TUW’s advanced e-learning management system,” added Dr. Luskin.

The five required courses leading to the “Certificate in Pastoral Counseling” are:

Contemporary Issues in Marriage and Family Therapy

Adult and Child Development within the Family Life Cycle

Counseling Couples

Pastoral Counseling Theory

Pastoral Counseling Practice

Those interested may call and speak with a qualified program advisor to learn more about the Pastoral Counseling Certificate Program.

TUW is now enrolling new students in the program every day.

The dramatic influence of rapidly growing social media, computers, telephony, television, movies and the Internet continue to surprise us all. Among the most fascinating developments is what we are learning from brain research using Magnetic Residence Imaging (MRI). Results are revealing specific outcomes affecting the brain and behavior. Media Psychology is now an official sub-specialty in the field of psychology. Last week, in Washington, D.C., I participated as member of the board of directors of Division 46, the Media Psychology Division of the American Psychology Association (APA) when we examined some of the new knowledge about the good and bad effects of video games, online learning and Internet resources such as Google, Yahoo and other media that most of us use every day.

Recent studies now validate the reality of Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD) that can cause tremors, shivers, nausea and anxiety in some addicts. Many professionals now consider IAD analogous to substance abuse and include it among other pathological behaviors such as gambling and eating disorders.

In short, numbers of people use broadcast and Internet media as a mental and emotional retreat and refuge. Addicts are connected to their screens; mind trapped for hours to the exclusion of the world around them. Addicts neglect family, work, studies, social relationships and themselves with an obsession that is human centered and screen deep.

Telemedicine, teletherapy and telehealth are bringing updated information, better understanding and improved services to the public. The value of positive psychology has been validated and positive media messages are helping to improve public understanding of major social and medical consequences of overweight, diet and lack of exercise, high cholesterol, and hypertension to highlight only a few. Increased public awareness and understanding through media is leading us to positive behavioral changes. In addition, the growth of new applications in commercial areas such as online buying and banking are positively contributing to the world’s economy at an astonishing rate.

Media centric education is proliferating. Education, from kindergarten through graduate school, corporate education and career learning are being transformed by media. Apollo astronaut Buzz Aldrin with whom I serve on the Board of HiTechHigh, Los Angeles recently had dinner with me. We talked about the current state of education, media and technology. Buzz, who earned a Ph.D in astronautics from MIT, observed that “children today have more computer power at their fingertips to do their homework than was onboard the space vehicles that first carried us into space.” When I asked Buzz if this is a good or bad thing, he shot back, “It’s good…. absolutely.” Media and social media are both distributors and drivers of social change. We need increased understanding of the effects of media to help manage our future.

The good:
• IQs are rising, according to the Education Testing Service. Much of the increase is due to advances in media assisted learning and interactive game playing.
• Girls are advancing in the field of science. Some studies attribute this to increased numbers of females engaging in interactive game play.
• The nexus between media and learning is increasingly popular and we are learning more about learning.
• Communication is increasing across cultures.

The bad:
• Attention spans are decreasing by exposure to excessively stimulating and fast-paced media. A direct link between exposure to media stimulation and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) has surfaced from research.
• Violence in media causes desensitization to violence. It may facilitate violent acts.
• Media-assisted crimes like identity theft and child pornography are taking new forms.
• Average number of sleep hours per night decreases in inverse proportion to the average number of hours per day of Internet use.
• Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD) is increasingly diagnosed by professionals.

Conclusions:

Research has found that playing action video games has a positive effect leading to improvements in visual attention. Therefore, research is revealing both problems and benefits from the relationship between media stimulation and attention.

Media studies, media and culture, media and communications psychology are central to our early 21st century world. New knowledge is emerging. As responsible parents and citizens, we must “pay attention.”

In an effort to brand the organization in the social media realm, Screen Actors Guild has limited its official Facebook and Twitter presence on each of these platforms, with all social media posts generated by the Guild’s Communications Department. This will soon change as the Guild launches additional social media channels to better serve its members. The shear volume of content needed will necessitate that additional staff members be charged with the ability and freedom to utilize social media within certain parameters based on existing Guild policies, suggestions by social media experts, and best practices of leading institutions. The overall goal is simple: to participate online in a respectful, relevant way that protects our reputation while engaging members. Key guidelines include turning off “wall posts” on Facebook; not disparaging the Guild or its members; using Facebook and Twitter to direct people to SAG.org; repurposing approved content; not promoting any individual member’s project; remaining neutral when “following” or “liking” other Facebook and Twitter channels; monitoring page comments daily, responding when necessary and removing those posts that violate the Guild’s Page Etiquette; and when in doubt, consulting the Communications Department for assistance. This social media expansion will allow the Guild to nano-market and increase its relevancy to specific groups within its membership. Increased sharing tools and content across multiple social media channels will further the spreadability of the Guild’s message and provide many opportunities to involve the collective.

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif., Oct. 13, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Touro University Worldwide Master’s degree students are taking their knowledge to one of the most popular industry events in Hollywood.

“Digital Hollywood has been an important event for the last twenty years is a gathering that enables media professionals to check the pulse of what’s new, what’s relevant, and what’s around the corner. Digital Hollywood is the perfect venue for our Media and Communication’s Psychology students,” said Dr. Toni Thomas Luskin, Director of the Media and Communications Psychology Program at Touro University Worldwide.

Eleven Touro University Worldwide Students will participate, network, and explore how their master’s degree in Media and Communications Psychology relates to the current trends in media, entertainment, and digital communications.

“I am very supportive of building the link between education and the media industry. Higher education obviously leads to professional advancement,” said Victor Harwood, President of Digital Hollywood. This year DH promises to pack a punch by showcasing heavy hitters and global thinkers. We are pleased to have the Touro University Master’s degree students participating,” added Harwood.

“As one who has been in the industry for several years, I have a new appreciation for the depth of knowledge and understanding this degree has given me. I can now actually see where a trend is going before it becomes common knowledge. This is a great way to put my education to the test,” said Martin Perlmutter, Master’s degree candidate in the Media and Communications Psychology degree program at Touro University Worldwide.

“Media Psychology is an important new sub-specialty in psychology, applying theories in psychology in fields such as health care, public policy, commerce, telecommunications, entertainment and education. Media psychology has become pervasive and part of the fabric of all we do,” said Luskin. “These TUW students are doing work that is at the cutting edge of a new era of increased understanding of audience emotions and behavior. Viewer response is not a mystery. It is quite predictable when one knows how to design programs and advertising to elicit a desired response,” Luskin continued.

Currently Touro University Worldwide’s master’s degree programs include:

Media and Communications Psychology
